While some of the older children read the ingredients from the recipes, others helped to measure the flour, milk, etc. They learnt about units of measure such as a teaspoon, a tablespoon, a pinch and a cup! Wonderful team effort, and from all accounts, 'yummy' pancakes for the morning snack that we are certain would not stick on a wall because they are in our tummies! (Eden was very clear that he would put all the ingredients other than egg, as the last time he made pancakes, he had egg all over his hands …) We save the batter for later.
We took a dive in the 'yellow submarine' - musically that is, in keeping with the musical theme for the week - the 'Beatles' and don't "we love them do"! We extended the musical theme to making a craft of a little submarine using plastic eggs casings and pipe cleaners. While making their 'colourful submarines', they were singing the chorus .."We all live in a Yellow Submarine…".
All that singing and craft-making made us hungry. Out came the batter and we had a 'flipping' good time with the pancakes (actually we didn't flip it this time, maybe the next).
Lunch, as usual, was al fresco with music from the 'Beatles' everywhere. Thereafter, some of us had 40 winks, while others went on to multiples of this number. Just a request - do watch the portions as some of our 'slammers' were unable to finish their lunch.
Speaking of which, please do not pack lunch for your children tomorrow. We will be making pizzas for lunch. We have registered the dietary restrictions that you conveyed to us.
Aunty May read a very acclaimed book, titled, ‘One Hen’ by Katie Smith Milway. 'One Hen' tells the story of Kojo, a boy from Ghana who cultivates a farm and built a flock of 25 hens, making it a viable enterprise. While the younger children may not have grasped all the narrative, they were enthralled, nevertheless by the pictures and descriptions. We will continue with the story tomorrow, maintaining the tiny bit of oral comprehension we introduced 'just to keep in touch' 😊!
Off came the calories from the pancakes with basketball drill! Uncle Dennis (ex-varsity basketball player), assisted by Uncle Sathish (who transcended his cricketing skills), taught us to dribble, shoot, pass and run. For most of us, the shooting was a hit and miss, with Mira and Ms Sanja who got it right on their first tries! We have to make do with an impromptu squad of cheerleaders from the on-looking Summer Slammers, displaying wonderful sportsmanship.
The ongoing hand-printing project saw the children depicting the giraffe and leopard today. The picture below shows proud faces with the lion they completed yesterday. Sorry, the photo did not capture the roar!
Jennifer, a percussion teacher, visited us today for a session with the children. She spoke to us about rhythm and taught us to clap to different 'patterns'. You must have seen the related craft that Jennifer introduced, the hand-held bells that became a fashion statement as a bracelet.
Another hot day and hydration with watermelon 'popsicles' that were made yesterday hit the spot!
Have a lovely evening and we will be in touch tomorrow.
